The annex to the rear of this beautiful sandstone house in West Kirby, Wirral, was formerly separated from the main house by a poorly lit, unused courtyard. By opening up the annex using roof-lights and picture windows, we crafted a contemporary family room linked to the other living spaces by a light-filled vestibule.
We sensitively incorporated glass sliding doors to form multi-functional spaces to suit the ongoing needs of family life, and improve how this amazing house could be experienced and enjoyed.
We worked collaboratively with a young family on the extension and refurbishment of their 1930’s bungalow in Heswall. With the brief to create a contemporary family home, we added a storey, rear and side extensions and flooded the previously dark home with light via the use of picture windows and sliding doors, framing the views over the River Dee towards Wales.
On the first floor we created a master suite, maximising the views over the Dee estuary with apex glazing and a terrace. The sleeping space is separated from the en-suite by a dressing room ‘pod’, its form accentuated by using floating walls within the vaulted space.
The original 1930’s semi-detached house in West Kirby had a disjointed living space to the rear following a number of small extensions and re-configurations by previous owners. The kitchen seemed distant from the rest of the house and was dark, damp and unpleasant to use.
We created a scheme to visually link the whole of the ground floor and to maximise the light as it moved round the house. The rear of the house was opened up to the landscaped garden using aluminium sliding doors to create a light filled open plan space for family life. Bespoke joinery made best use of the original alcoves and pillars and provides essential storage space for the family.
The focus of this project in Heswall was to remove the existing redundant and inefficient conservatory and remodel the disjointed kitchen and dining space.
We used large expanses of glass to connect the house with the rear garden and to provide enhanced, light-filled spaces for the family and for socialising.
